Madam Irene Sam, spokesperson for the National Council of PTAs of Ghana, has called for a total review of the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), citing repeated challenges and frustrations faced by parents each year during school placements.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem, Madam Sam said that although parents are now more eager than ever to send their children to school—demonstrated by the way they proudly carry their children’s trunks and chop boxes—it is disheartening that the placement process continues to cause distress.
She explained that many parents travel long distances only to be told to return another day, and in some cases, the mistakes that occur are not caused by them but by officials working with the Free SHS Secretariat who manage the computerized system.
According to her, “Every year the same problems keep repeating themselves, and it is becoming very frustrating for parents. As a council, we think it’s time authorities sit down to identify where the problem is coming from and improve the system.”
Madam Sam emphasized that the council has observed these recurring issues for a long time and believes it is time to ensure the system becomes more effective and less burdensome for parents. She added that every system should improve over time, not worsen, and therefore urged stakeholders to make the necessary changes to ensure smooth placement for all students in the future.
