The Municipal Fire Commander for New Juaben North, Mr. Dominic Agyepong, has cautioned the public to take fire safety measures seriously to help reduce the growing incidents of fire outbreaks in schools, homes, and communities, especially during the dry season.
Mr. Agyepong, speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Binney, explained that fire outbreaks are often categorized into commercial or institutional fires, such as those that occur in schools. He cited a recent example at OMESS, where a dormitory was destroyed by fire. He added that during the rainy season, bushfires are common, and in the dry season, fire incidents increase due to human activities.
According to him, the causes of fire outbreaks have been grouped into four categories, with the first being ignorance. He explained that some people cause fires unknowingly, using the example of a child lighting a matchstick without understanding its danger, which can lead to burning down a house. Adults, too, sometimes ignorantly join positive and negative electrical wires, causing fires.
The second category is negligence, which results from carelessness and failure to follow safety instructions. He warned that ignoring safety guidelines, such as overloading sockets, can easily lead to electrical fires. “One socket is not meant to power multiple appliances like fridges, televisions, irons, microwaves, and laptops at the same time. Overloading can make the socket fail and cause fire,” he stressed.
Mr. Agyepong urged residents to adhere to safety measures, avoid careless handling of electrical appliances, and follow fire safety instructions to protect lives and properties.
