The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) has expressed its commitment to collaborate with President John Mahama to tackle the challenges confronting the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the broader power sector.
In a statement dated January 13 and signed by its General Secretary, Timothy Nyame, PUWU reiterated its opposition to the privatization of ECG, urging the President to consider alternative strategies that prioritize the interests of Ghanaians.
“We recall our previous engagements with the former NDC administration on issues related to ECG,” the statement read. “PUWU of TUC Ghana reaffirms its unchanged stance against the privatization of ECG, emphasizing that the proposed alternatives remain the best solutions for Ghanaians and other stakeholders.”
As a union with significant representation in the utilities and housing sectors, PUWU expressed its readiness to work closely with the government to develop lasting solutions to the country’s energy, water, and housing challenges. The union underscored the importance of ensuring that these essential services remain accessible and affordable to the public.
Acknowledging the investments made by both local and international partners in the energy sector, Mr. Nyame called on President Mahama to strengthen engagements with these stakeholders to address the nation’s energy concerns.
“PUWU is fully aware of the diverse interests—both domestic and international—seeking opportunities in the power and energy sector. We are also aware of groups that previously pursued ECG privatization and have reappeared with renewed efforts. It is essential to protect the interests of Ghanaians by avoiding decisions that could undermine public ownership of ECG,” he added.
The union urged the government to prioritize solutions that safeguard national interests while fostering sustainable development in the utilities sector.
