David Kwabena Torsutsey, Chairman of Persons with Disabilities in New Juaben South has called on President John Dramani Mahama to make 24-Hour Economy Policy inclusive to provide Job opportunities to person with Disabilities
According to him, persons with disabilities in Ghana have been denied many economic opportunities which has resulted in many being impoverished.
Indeed, the United Nations estimates that between 80 to 90 percent of working-age PWDs in developing countries, including Ghana, remain unemployed.
Ghana has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and passed the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), both aimed at eliminating employment discrimination and promoting accessible job opportunities.
The call for inclusion comes as government prepares to roll out the 24-hour economy initiative aimed at boosting productivity and job creation.
According to David Torsutsey, ” equal opportunities should be given to persons with disabilities who qualified to work under 24-hour economy. For us most, when it comes to Sit-down job we are very productive than the able people because we don’t move neither do we go out to roam in town or whatever so we want the government to consider us in that regard under the policy to give us job opportunities “.
These concerns were raised during the inauguration of A and N Foundation formed by two individuals -a Ghanaian and Cameroonian living abroad to support persons with disabilities in Ghana and Cameroon.
According to Samuel Aboagye foundation aims to provide comfort, empowerment, and resources to individuals with disabilities to improve their lives.
Asante Boateng a philanthropist who supported vulnerable groups is advocating policy that benefits every Ghanaian, regardless of physical ability.
