Former president of the University of Ghana SRC and well-known in the entertainment industry Maradona Yeboah Adjei, famed as Guru NKZ, has described how his student activism and leadership efforts resulted in a historic win for students.
With the help of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, Guru was able to negotiate a 50% reduction in traditional hall costs during his tenure, he disclosed in an interview with Joy Prime.
He clarified that his group had opposed what they saw as an unjust increase in hall fees, which went from GH¢2,000 to GH¢3,000, further taxing students and their families.
“We fought the system. We petitioned every level of authority, right up to the Minister of Education. With the intervention of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we secured a 50% reduction. It had never happened before; that was a real victory for students,” he said.
“This is the first time someone from showbiz represented the entire student body. It set a precedent, showing that artists, too, can lead, inspire, and influence policy in meaningful ways,” he added.
