On 27th August 2025, Mr. Amo Yartey, Director of the Inspectorate Division at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), granted an interview on Adekyee Mu Nsem with Yaw Obeng on Bryt FM concerning the reopening of the Bagre Dam.
According to Mr. Yartey, the program is not new but is managed by SONABEL, a company from Burkina Faso responsible for operating the dam. He explained that SONABEL not only manages the dam but also trains nationals in disaster management.
He revealed that a month ago, the dam was already filled to capacity, and SONABEL stepped in to provide support. NADMO has since intensified its monitoring in the four northern regions — Upper East, Upper West, North East, Northern Region, and Savannah Region — where the impact is usually felt.
When asked whether the spillage would affect farmers, Mr. Yartey noted that although there might be some effects, the damage would not be severe if farmers carefully study weather patterns and adopt proper farming practices. He further stated that NADMO has begun educating the public and various organizations on spillage management to minimize risks.
Mr. Yartey added that security experts have also held meetings to discuss disaster management strategies. He assured that SONABEL is doing its part in managing the dam effectively.
In conclusion, Mr. Yartey disclosed that on Tuesday morning, around 10:30 a.m., the spillage nearly reached Ghana but was kept under control. He expressed gratitude that the situation remains manageable.
