Following the potential reintroduction of Tollbooths across the country, some drivers in the Bono East Region are calling on the Inspector General of Police to remove his Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) from the roads else they will not pay the tolls.
According to some Taxi drivers who ply the Techiman-Kintampo highway and spoke in an interview with Nana Kwadwo Adu, there are about four (4) MTTD barrier checkpoints within that stretch and at each point the Police would extort at least gh5 from each vehicle therefore the absence of the Tollbooths brought a big relief to them.
Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Casiel Ato Baah Forson during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday 13th January, 2025 reiterated the NDC’s commitment to its promise of bringing back road tolls –a policy which was removed by the previous NPP Government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo following the introduction of E-levy.
But Drivers in the Bono East Region believe road tolls should not be reintroduced because they cannot feel its proceeds reflecting in road maintenance or national infrastructural development as the personnel mounting the booths do not account of much of the monies collected.
Meanwhile, Hawkers at the Tanoboase Tollbooth in the Techiman North Municipality have welcomed the Government’s decision, calling it great news and have shared their excitement with Peace News……

However, the Hawkers sharing their sentiments on the dangers of their work urged commercial drivers to take it easy whenever they reach the Tollbooths for Passengers to patronize their goods.
