John Dumelo, a farmer and entrepreneur, is worried about the harsh financial conditions placed on rent rates for residential properties in the nation.
He claims that requiring tenants to pay two or three years’ worth of rent in advance is “killing” Ghanaians. He thus urges the appropriate authorities to take a serious look at the situation.

John Dumelo would not be the first to enter the country’s rental market. He demanded the arrest of any landlord in the nation who required tenants to pay a two-year advance for residential properties in September 2023.
Dumelo also lamented the Rent Control Department’s incapacity to stop landlords’ habit of requiring advance payments from renters, which eats away at young people’s life savings and prevents many Ghanaians from having access to affordable accommodation.
In Ghana, the maximum allowable rent payment is six months, yet landlords have discovered ways to demand large upfront payments from renters before providing them access to residential units.
