Former Black Stars player and 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mohammed Polo has asked the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to respect local coaches as they seeks to appoint technical director for the association.
The technical directorate position has become vacant following exit of Oti Akenteng last month.
According to the spokesperson of the Ghana FA, they have up to next week to appoint a new technical director for the association following FIFA’s one week ultimatum.
However, Polo has cautioned the domestic football governing body to respect local coaches by appointing somebody who is from the country to head the technical department of the FA.
“I feel that local coaches have grown in the game. I think the immediate past (TD) of the FA, Oti Akenteng did his best and it is about time they give the job to a Ghanaian to continue where he ended”
“Trophies won at African Cup of Nations were won by local coaches and so, if we are in search of a TD, we shouldn’t worry ourselves to appoint an expatriate. To be honest, it will be an insult if the FA does that”
“For me, they shouldn’t have even included foreign coaches on their shortlist because we have the men. Even giving opportunity for interested coaches to apply for the job is wrong. They should have gone straight and appoint the right person for us”
“I think this application is just a formality, they know what they are doing but I pray they choose the right person for us” he told Sylvester Ntim ‘Koke’ of Bryt FM.
