Road accidents claimed 471 lives in Eastern Region from January to December 2021.
An overall of 425 lives got lost through road accidents in the Eastern Region in 2020 as against 289 deaths recorded in 2019.
Motor Traffic and Transport Department Report for 2021 in the Eastern Region revealed that out of the total number of deaths recorded, 277 were pedestrians who were knocked down but 174 were injured whilst 103 lost their lives.
A total of 192 others were killed in a road accident and 543 were also injured and the total number of vehicles involved in the accident was 2,528.
Of the 2,528 vehicles involved in the accident, 865 were private and 1,090 were commercial vehicles.
The total number of accident cases recorded in the region was 1,507 and 365 of them were fatal, 490 were serious and 652 were minor.
