The Minister of Roads and Highways Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta has said the government had signed five-year reliability defects with road contractors, which would mandate any contractor to fund the routine maintenance works on a road constructed shoddily for five years.
The move, he said, was to curb poor road construction and ensure value for money.
Mr. Amoako-Atta, addressing the media at the Minister’s briefing in Accra said “if you are a contractor and you don’t construct the road by specification, and you do shoddy work and I tell you we have several excellent contractors in the country comparing to any part in the world, but the same time, I cannot stand here as a minister and say that all contractors are good”.
The minister noted that the initial 12 months of reliability defects allowed many contractors to slip through, and warned that any engineer who certifies shoddy work will be taken on.
Mr. Amoako-Atta, Minister of Roads and Highway revealed that an amount of ¢7.827 billion is needed to rehabilitate the road infrastructure deficit in the country.
He said that about 81 critical roads were identified in all 16 regions which need government intervention.
