The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs have been urged not to back down from their support for the ouster of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.
He asserted that any attempt by NPP MPs to abandon their campaign to have Mr Ofori-Atta removed would be detrimental to Ghana’s democracy by undermining the oversight function of Parliament.
On November 10, according to Mr Iddrisu, he will introduce a motion in Parliament calling for Mr Ofori-Atta to be censured for certain votes.
He acknowledged that the National Democratic Congress legislators lack the necessary number—two-thirds—to pass their resolution; as a result, they will need the backing of the NPP MPs, who had earlier called for Mr Ofori-dismissal.
“I’m determined to move the motion of censure,” he said while speaking at the political dialogue series organized by Media General on Wednesday, November 8.
He added “Admittedly, the Minority MPs, standing alone, may not achieve the two-thirds number and so when the Majority said they will support us, it was comforting. If they chicken out, it will weaken Parliament, it will weaken the oversight role of Parliament and the minister will run riot.”
He added, “Anywhere in the world, Mr Ofori-Atta should have been gone by now, taking full responsibility for what has happened.”
