The Director of Elections at the Electoral Commission (EC) Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, has said they engaged more security personal at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Wednesday, 27th May 2020 because they are not in normal times.
There was a heavy security presence at the premises of the EC as personnel of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) were deployed to the premises where IPAC meeting on the compilation of new voters register.
The reason for the presence of over 70 police officers at the Electoral Commission of Ghana was not known but in an interview with the media after the meeting, Dr. Serebour Quaicoo said “we are not in normal times that is why the police were many and even some members of one political party were trying to disrupt the meeting over their internal issue.
He said the political party which he could not identify was fighting over a person to represent them at the meeting but the EC and security intervened and asked them to go and address their internal issue at the party’s office.
The Electoral Commission has announced that it will embark on the new voters’ registration exercise in five clusters.
The Director of Elections at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoo explained that the exact date would be announced later but it is expected to start in the last week of June.
He said the commission has planned to use 38 days for the entire exercise.
Already the commission has planned to start the exercise from late June 2020.
