Anthony Adusei, assistant coach to Otto Pfister during the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations has admitted the Black Stars needed a psychologist amid captaincy row.
Baffoe was handed the captain’s armband before the final; much to the dismay of Anthony Yeboah and his camp, with Yeboah having recently stated that the decision affected his output on the pitch during the game.
With Abedi Pele suspended for the final clash with the Ivorians, it was widely expected that Yeboah will get the captain’s armband.
However he was snubbed and the captaincy went to the then room-mate of Pele, Anthony Baffoe.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s dream of winning its 5th AFCON title hit a snag after losing 11-10 on penalties to Ivory Coast.
In an interview with Kwaku Sarpong Sarkodie of Bryt FM, coach Adusei said, “I want to emphasize that there was disunity in the team and I think we needed a psychologist then. But since there was no psychologist around some of us who had a bit background in psychology took it upon ourselves to calm down nerves”
“The problem started when Otto Pfister stripped Kwasi Appiah off the captaincy. It wasn’t easy for you to see the team been united. So I thought as much that it will go a long way to affect the team in the tournament. That is why I am saying if we have had a psychologist he could have done something about it” he said.
