The National Service Scheme Farms, situated at Sekyere Plains in the Ashanti Region welcomed the Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum as he embarked on a tour to explore the vast 50,000 acres of land intended for agricultural purposes.
Joined by officials from the National Service Scheme and agricultural experts, the minister embarked on a comprehensive tour of the farm, which has become a key component of the government’s efforts to support the Planting for Foods and Jobs initiative.
Currently, 2,000 acres of the farm under the Sekyere Kumawu Economic Enclave Project (SKEEP) are actively dedicated to the cultivation of rice and maize, yielding substantial harvests, which are subsequently used to support the school feeding program in Ghana.
This initiative not only aids in providing food for the nation but also provides employment opportunities for local farmers and National Service Personnel.
Officials from the National Service Scheme provided insights into the farm’s operations, highlighting sustainable farming practices and innovative approaches that contribute to its success.
Dr Osei Adutwum was very impressed by the dedication and hard work exhibited by the management and staff of National Service Scheme towards this initiative and the government is committed to supporting great initiatives such as this.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is expected to receive 600 bags of maize from the NSS Farm from its maiden harvest for the feeding of Senior High School students.
