The Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku Constituency in Greater Accra Region Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has through her financial allocation funded the training of 54 unemployed young girls in the Constituency in dressmaking and hairdressing.
Each beneficiary has been graduated with startups equipment such as Hair Dryers and Hand Sewing Machines.
The Member of Parliament apprenticeship intervention is part of an effort by the MP to reduce unemployment in the Constituency.
At a brief ceremony to graduate the beneficiaries, the lawmaker said, the youthful population has increased over the years with limited opportunities to acquire employable skills.
According to the MP, the unemployment figures have ballooned to the skies and there is a greater tendency of the security crisis in this country hence believes “acquisition of skills and the training of women, most especially, the greatest starting point to address the unemployment canker. Therefore, we designed the “Member of Parliament Apprenticeship Programme” to cater to the missing gaps.
“This program, Nene Chairman, is to equip our women with employable skills and a sustainable career that can provide for their future growth and betterment. Given this, sixty-two (62) constituents were selected from the various communities and placed under the program. An average number of them were assigned to a Coach/Madam/Trainer. At the end of the training, however, Fifty-four (54) have successfully passed out and are here before us for this memorable occasion. They were provided with basic equipment for the commencement of work”.
The MP was however unhappy to mention that, “the program was heavily politicized; something I find quite worrying. We cannot continue to politicize everything. I am the MP duly elected. Thus, whatever gain or benefit or support I bring forth is for the betterment of Shai-Osudoku. The opportunities are open to everyone irrespective of colour, party, or religion. This is not an NPP or NDC affair. This is a Shai-Osudoku development affair”.
The MP advised the beneficiaries that the “training should be your guide and the guide for other trainees that would pass through your experiences. You must make profitable future Madams/Trainers that can provide advice, counsel, and development to your generation. Do not fold your arms and close the opportunity to other people who would wish to learn from your experiences. Take on the world and make Shai-Osudoku a better place”
The MP thanked the chiefs, DCE for the area, and parents of the beneficiaries for their support and corporation.
The DCE supported the program with Ghc2000 and 3 pieces of hairdryers and two sewing machines
The MP said a date will be announced for the next batch of beneficiaries to be trained and equipped.
