Schools in Kwahu South municipality in Eastern region have been hit with shortage of lesson notebooks for many months affecting teaching and learning.
Lesson note is a tool for documenting the flow of a topic or a class and its impact on students.
It is compulsory for teachers in Ghana to prepare lesson notes every week.
However supply of lesson notebooks has not been forthcoming from the Ministry of Education in recent years.
The Kwahu South Education Directorate therefore submitted request to the Municipal Assembly to assist in purchasing Lesson Notebooks for teachers in the Municipality due to consistent shortage of the teaching material.
The Assembly responded by purchasing two hundred (200) pieces of lesson notebooks which the the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive personally donated Hundred (100) pieces in addition bringing the total to three hundred (300) pieces which was handed over to the Education Directorate on Wednesday July 12, 2023.
Most teachers have been in a fight recently with their School Improvement and Support Officers and their headteachers to write and submit their lesson notes for vetting creating misunderstanding between teachers and their SISOs.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had said on Wontumi Radio that writing lesson notes into notebooks is a thing of the past.
He posted that the introduction of the one teacher, one laptop initiative, teachers will no more be require to write lesson notes into notebooks.
The Minister further said, the introduction of Continuous professional development in schools has come to replace the writing of lesson notes into notebooks by teachers.
He explained that Professional Learning Community PLC is been organized in schools to improve teachers’ competency.
Explaining the main reason why teachers are not bound to write lesson notes, Dr. Adutwum said teachers have been copying old lesson notes into their books without adding new things.
The Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had echoed same during the launch of the one-teacher one laptop initiative that teachers will not be forced to write lesson notes again because the soft copy of the lesson notes is already in the laptops.
