The Sierra Leone national team qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament after defeating Benin in Conakry, Guinea.
Striker Kei Kamara’s goal from the spot settled the encounter as the Leone Stars secures qualification to the AFCON tournament for the first time in 25 years.
The last time Sierra Leone participated in the continental showcase was back in 1996.
The much-anticipated game was originally scheduled for Freetown on March 30, 2021, but was postponed after Benin refused to play as five of their players had tested positive for COVID-19.
However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed the game and it was finally cleared on Tuesday, June 15.
Benin mounted pressure on the Leone Stars in search of an equalizer but was able to hold on for a historic victory and earn a place in the 24-team continental finals scheduled for Cameroon early next year.
Sierra Leone needed victory to move above Benin, who had required just a point to seal second place behind group winners Nigeria.
