In a quest to empower students with disabilities, a Ghanaian sign language interpreter and contender for 2024 sign-a-thon, Keith Aboagye Ofosuhene, has donated to learners at Koforidua School for the Deaf and Individuals with Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD) in the New Juaben South Municipality.
Mr. Keith Aboagye, who doubles as a staff member of Koforidua Technical University (KTU), visited the students with his team to motivate them to learn in order to change the total narrative about the people with disabilities in the country.
The 2024 sign-a-thon contender donated 35 pieces of sachet water to school. He promised to support the school.
In a way to encourage the learners, Mr. Keith Aboagye mentioned a man named Juventus Duorinaah who has made history as the first deaf lawyer in Ghana and is also marking a significant milestone for both the legal profession and the country’s disability community.
He cited to the learners that Duorinaah’s remarkable journey is a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome barriers to achieve his dreams in Ghana.
Mr. Keith Aboagye “Duorinaah never saw his disability as a challenge for him; he tried everything he could and is now a lawyer. You shouldn’t look down on yourself because, just as an able person can accomplish anything, so can a physically challenged person in their own unique way.”
Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Solomon Nartey of Bryt FM after the presentation, Mr. Keith Aboagye emphasized the importance of supporting and encouraging physically challenged individuals and helping them to fulfill their goals and dreams.
“The reason I advocated for the Sign-A-Thon is to help discover and develop the skills and talent of physically challenged people so that they can also fit into any working place they find themselves in,” he stated.
Morgadzi Daniel Kwame, the Assistant Headmaster for Deaf and Individuals with Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD), expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Keith Aboagye and his team for their kind gesture.
He also urged stakeholders, intuitions, non-governmental organizations, and philanthropists to come to their aid.
Mr. Morgadzi called for financial support and the construction of male and female dormitories to help improve the school.
