The only female candidate in Somalia’s presidential election has said if she doesn’t win she’ll have broken the glass ceiling for other women to run.
Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam told the BBC’s Focus on Africa that women could be the solution to the problems in Somalia.
“We have a conflict which has so many faces. For 30 years men did not sort this out, so maybe women can,” she said.
Ms Yusuf said men have been present in clan and political leadership while women have been busy taking care of children.
She cited her experience as a parliamentarian, foreign affairs minister and deputy prime minister.
“I think I’m well experienced now…and I have determination now,” she said.
Ms Yusuf says her priority will be to restore peace and security and facilitate reconciliation.
“Number one actually should be the constitution…we don’t actually have a constitution, we need to finalise our constitution so we have laws,” she said.
