PRESS STATEMENT
Universal Friendship Organisation Calls for Collective Action to Address Ongoing Bawku Conflict
The Universal Friendship Organisation is deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Bawku, which has been a recurring challenge to peace and stability in the region. We believe that it is imperative for all relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional councils, peace councils, and the Muslim community, to come together to help the government address this conflict.
Devastating Impact of the Conflict
The protracted Bawku conflict, spanning several decades, has claimed over 300 lives since November 2021, leaving a devastating impact on the socio-economic lives of thousands of people living in the towns and adjoining districts. The nagging dispute between the Kusasis and Mamprusis seems to be eroding all the gains chalked up by the municipality over the years, and turning Bawku into a ghost town due to heightened insecurity.
Concern about Lack of Interest from Peace Advocacy Groups
We are disappointed that peace advocacy groups, which often champion general elections, have not shown sufficient interest in promoting peace in chieftaincy matters. We urge these groups to demonstrate more commitment to peacebuilding in times of conflict, particularly in matters that affect the well-being of communities.
Impact of the Conflict
The ongoing Bawku conflict has far-reaching consequences, including:
- Loss of Lives: The conflict has claimed over 300 lives since November 2021, and continues to pose a threat to the lives of residents.
- Socio-Economic Impact: The conflict has had a devastating impact on the socio-economic lives of thousands of people living in the towns and adjoining districts.
- National Security: The conflict exacerbates tension and poses a challenge to our national security system.
- Development: The conflict impedes development and undermines the progress of the region.
Call for Collective Action
We call on all stakeholders to work together to find a lasting solution to the conflict. Given the complexity of the issue, we propose engaging international bodies to provide support and guidance in resolving the conflict.
5 Strategies to Address the Conflict
We propose the following strategies to address the ongoing Bawku conflict:
- Stakeholder Engagement: Bring together all relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders, community members, and security agencies, to engage in dialogue and find a lasting solution.
- Conflict Resolution Mechanisms: Establish effective conflict resolution mechanisms, such as mediation and arbitration, to address disputes and prevent further escalation.
- Community Engagement: Engage with the local community to promote peace and understanding, and to address the root causes of the conflict.
- Security Measures: Implement effective security measures to protect lives and property, and to prevent further violence.
- International Support: Seek support from international bodies, such as the United Nations, to provide guidance and assistance in resolving the conflict. Conclusion
The Universal Friendship Organisation believes that collective action and a commitment to peacebuilding can help resolve the ongoing Bawku conflict. We urge all stakeholders to work together to find a lasting solution and to promote peace and stability in the region.
Signed
Universal Friendship Organisation
