Mr Joseph Omane Boateng, Senior Audiologist at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital has cautioned Ghanaians to refrain from the use of match-sticks and pen tops to remove wax from the ear.
According to him, the wax in the ear canal is there for a purpose hence removing it will expose the ear-drum to germs.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Joseph Omane Boateng lectured that the use of match-sticks and pen tops to remove wax from the ear could damage the ear since the wax is protecting the ear.
He also urged Ghanaians to escape from the frequent use of headsets and hands-free stating that it has the possible means to cause hearing loss.
“The ear is very sensitive and too much noise could cause hearing damage, especially when using headsets and hands-free at all times,” he said.
A day is set aside by the World Health Organization to create awareness of hearing impairment and its possible causes.
