Basake Holy Stars attacking midfielder Sylvester Simba believes government intervention could help resolve the mass departure of players from the local scene.
The mass departure of players from the local scene has affected the standard of the Ghana Premier League and other competitions as most players who turn out to perform well join other clubs on the continent or move directly to Europe.
Simba in an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM bemoaned meager salary of Ghana Premier League players. He then compared the financial disparity between Ghana Premier League and leagues across the continent.
According to him, the home-based players now prefer to even play in Togo because of money.
“Player exodus has been the topic of the day in recent times. I know the GFA is doing their best to make the league more attractive but I think it will take time because of the rampant exit of players”
“The likes of Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and few other clubs are paying something normal to players but salaries given to players elsewhere is too bad”
In a bid to abrogate the rampant departure of players, the enterprising midfielder has pleaded with government to step in and make salaries favorable for players.
“Our players now prefer to play in even Togo because of money. It is sad to return home at the end of the season with a maximum amount of GHC4,000. I will plead with the government to step in and make salaries favorable to the players. Honestly, it’s too bad playing in Ghana”.
