Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has bemoaned lack of competition in the senior national soccer team, the Black Stars.
The four-time African champions has underperformed in recent times, bowing out of major competition at the group stage.
And Appiah speaking at the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports attributed the Black Stars poor showing to lack of competition in the team.
“We need to give local players the chance and the confidence to play for the national team,” Appiah urged.
“We played our second qualifiers against South Africa in Kumasi and defeated them 3-0. I scored two goals in the game but I was not the man of the match, it was William Tiero of Liberty Professionals, who won it. So this is the difference. Today, we don’t have such things anymore” he concluded.
“There was competition during our time but today, there is no competition so some players’ feel relaxed that whether they play well or not they will still be selected”.
