Following the recent arrest of the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC’s) Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, some Ghanaians have criticized the ruling government especially their leader, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo of being intolerant.
Though the communications director has been granted bill, the citizens especially non-members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are unhappy of the government’s decision.
Taking to social media, under the hashtag ‘freeSammyGyamfiNow, some said; “Nana Akuffo Addo, you are becoming more intolerant each day. Nyaho Tamakloe warned us but we didn’t listen. What has Sammy Gyamfi done to be arrested? Free the young man now. The last time I checked, Ghana was still a democratic country. We tolerate different views”.
Adding up, the citizens on their social media handle (Twitter) thinks this action of the president is a testament to his failure. “No amount of intimidation by the government will deter us from fighting for the ultimate will of the Ghanaian people. Democracy has now been redefined under the tyrant’s president. Intolerance”, one of the twitter critics averred.
Aside the numerous comments by the critics, Edward Omane Boamah who was the Minister for Communications and Spokesperson to the President of the Republic of Ghana under the Mahama-led government joined the train calling for the concerns of activist regarding the arrest of Sammy Gyamfi including those in NPP.
To him, the government owes the NDC duty to ensure the safety of their communication director citing that Alhaji Issah Mobila, the Northern Regional Chairman on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) who was once arrested under an NPP government and was tortured to death on December 9, 2004.
The NDC’s communication director has been granted bail.
