The Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development has described it as a disingenuous statement by former President John Mahama that the government has abandoned newly created regions without developing them.
The former President during his Thank You tour in the region two weeks ago at Nalerigu, said that what makes a region is infrastructural projects and not just boundaries demarcating regions.
“You cannot just create regions in the name. The regions must be worthy of being called regions. And it is the infrastructure that makes a region a region”
However, Speaking at a gathering of Chiefs and people in the Western North Region as part of President Akufo Addo’s working visit in the region, Dan Botwe said the statement by the former president is untrue and that nananom have attested to the fact that development is ongoing in the region contrary to his assertion.
“Two main things were requested in the petition -Depened decentralization and accelerated development. This is what runs through all the petitions received by the President so if someone says since the creation of the regions no development is ongoing. Nananom, your statement today tells us that politics must be done in truthfulness. The fact that you are desperate for power doesn’t mean you should be disingenuous. You have to be truthful. so it is disheartening that former President [John Mahama] went to Nalerigu to say the creation of regions goes beyond drawing it on paper”
He stressed that just two and half years to conduct a referendum to vote on the new regions, President Akufo-Addo’s government has done tremendous work and improve on decentralization in the Western North Region.
