There is an uneasy political tension over the appointment of Deputy constituency executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party in Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, as five elected officers are up in arms against the Member of Parliament and the constituency chairman.
This follows confusion which erupted during a meeting chaired by the Regional 2nd Vice Chairman, Mr Twum Barima in Koforidua to resolve the matter.
The newly-elected constituency Organiser, Youth Organiser, Treasurer, Secretary, and Assistant Secretary have declared war against the decision of the MP, Boafo Kwadjo Asante, and the Chairman, Frederick Ofosu for an attempt to appoint deputies for them without consultation.
The Suhum constituency executives constitute ten elected officers belonging to two internal camps.
Whilst the Constituency chairman, first and second vice-chairmen, Women Organiser, and Nasara Coordinator belong to the incumbent MP’s camp, the other five officers belong to the camp of Frank Aseidu Bekoe, the Political Adviser to the Chief of Staff, who is also eyeing the Suhum Parliamentary seat.
Due to that, the appointment of the Constituency deputy officers has deepened the division between the two camps which are fighting to push their affiliates to the vacant positions.
The Constituency Treasurer, Mr Charles Ntow, alleged that the constituency chairman convened a meeting in which the MP and constituency Chairman made a list of their choice to be appointed deputies to the elected officers without laid down procedure.
He argued that the constitution of the party give them the elected officers mandate to appoint their deputies” but here is the case, the MP and the Chairman in their interests went ahead to impose aliens on them, hence the need to refer the matter to the Regional Executives to intervene”.
The aggrieved executives further accused the Chairman of imposing a choice of Deputies for them in the interest of the Member of Parliament.
At the Regional level, the meeting which was attended by the MP didn’t go on successfully hence the Constituency Executives were tasked to go back and do the right thing.
The Suhum Constituency Chairman Frederick Ofosu, when contacted said, he convened a meeting attended by the MP since he has a voting right but the meeting didn’t end successfully due to a misunderstanding over one nominee for the Position of Research officer, which the five elected officers didn’t accept and walked out of the meeting.
He noted that a quorum was formed before the other five executives walked out, hence they went ahead with the meeting and sent the list of the appointees to the Regional Executives for a recommendation.
The Constituency chairman denied the accusation that his outfit is working in the interest of the MP and also explained that all that he is doing is what the party Constitution has given him the mandate to do.
Meanwhile, the aggrieved constituency executives have threatened not to allow the matter to rest, till the chairman and the MP allow them to appoint their preferred members as deputies.
