The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekufful has appealed to the minority in parliament to come in terms with the majority to pass the electronic levy (E-levy) to help boost the economy of the country.
She added that many business companies are running their activities online due to the outbreak of the pandemic.
To her, the country is now independent and Ghanaians need to pay taxes to help the country not to rely on advanced countries for wealth.
She stressed that only 8% of Ghanaian population are carrying the developmental needs of the entire country and carrying the tax burden of over 38 million people.
At the Government Townhall Meeting on E-levy in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, the minister indicated that the e-levy will facilitate the development of the country in the next future, adding that e-levy will not collapse any work but rather to strengthen it.
‘‘It is unfair to many public sector workers and those who have registered with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as taxpayers whilst the rest ( both formal and informal sector) find ingenious ways of evading our certain responsibilities of paying taxes,’’ she affirmed.
Hon. Ursula Owusu added that the country needs to finance its own development as a country and stop depending on aid from some countries.
