There is tension brewing at Koforidua -Asokore Zongo in the Eastern region over the enstoolment of two Zongo Chiefs by two groups.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Koforidua-Asokore Zongo Alhaji Umar Faruk Bello is appealing to the youth in the area to remain calm as the issue is resolved.
Alhaji Umar Faruk Bello was enstooled on the 3rd March 2018 as Asokore Zongo Chief, but surprisingly, on August 12, 2022, the feuding Banda tribe also enstooled Banda Amadu Ahmed as New Zongo Chief.
This has escalated tension in the community.
However, a durbar has been held at the palace of Asokore Zongo chief to calm down tempers.
According to the secretary to the chief of Koforidua- Asokore Zongo, Banda Amadu Ahmed, “one afternoon on the 12th August 2022 whilst we were at the Mosque worshipping and a section of the Banda tribe stormed the Mosque and enstooled a new chief so we reported the issue to the New Juaben North police commander but they told the commander that they did not do anything of that sort but what they did indicates that they have enstooled a new chief, they even announced in the Mosque that this is our new chief”.
“They told us that Koforidua Asokore Zongo belongs to them so they will not allow the chief (Alhaji Umar Faruk Bello) to continue to be a chief of Asokore Zongo, but all this while our chief was not around so informed him of what has happened in his absence, so that led to his return on his journey and he instructed us to petition stakeholders including the Zongo Chief of Koforidua, The police Commander of the region, The Municipal Commander, The Municipal Commander, The Municipal Chief Executive as well as Asokore chief” he explained.
Alhaji Umar Faruk Bello was enstooled on the 3rd March 2018 as the legitimate chief of Koforidua Asokore Zongo and he was further elected as the New Chairman of New Juaben North Council of Zongo Communities.
Meanwhile, the chief explained that the action of the Banda tribe is a threat to destabilize the long-lasting peace of the Asokore Zongo but he will take due diligence through consultation with the appropriate stakeholders in the region to amicably resolve the issue.
He further assured and urged his followers to smoke the peace pipe with their opposing faction whilst his outfit continues to engage leadership in the New Juaben North Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).
