Tension is rising in Akyem Ofoase in Akyemansa District in the Eastern region again as Zongo youth warns of a reprisal attack if police fail to arrest gunmen from the neighboring Akyem Brenase community who shot one person dead and injured four others last week.
The casualties were recorded when Ofoase Zongo youth were ambushed by a gang from Brenase during community clashes.
Addressing the media spokesperson for the Ofoase Zongo youth General Abubakari Buhari said the incident occurred when some youth of Ofoase Zongo was arrested and handed to police as alleged wanted criminal from Brenase terrorizing residents when he attempted to rob “outlaw spot”.
He said the father of the suspect led a gang amidst firing of a gunshot to storm the Zongo community by were overpowered and handed over to the police as well.
However, some gun-wielding youth from Brenase attacked them leading to the casualties.
He stated “our youth only did what is expected of every good citizen of Ghana” “yes! they only assisted in apprehending a known rascal who is the leader of the armed robbery group in the area and has been on the wanted list of the Ghana police service in Akim Ofoase..”
According to General Buhari, the known suspected armed robber had come with his group to engage in robbery around the “outlaw spot”, a popular drinking spot in Akim Ofoase about 8:30 pm, Monday the 25th July 2022…Our youth who were in the town at the time picked that Intel and quickly chased him, arrested and handed him over to the police in Akim Ofoase.
The father of the criminal who feeds on the proceeds of his robbery mobilizes his gang members in 2 tricycles with guns and matches to attack our young men for no crime. Such an irresponsible father who had failed woefully to train his son to be a useful person in society. what crime did our youth commit in this regard to warrant such animalistic attacks from the rest of the criminals who had the vow to attack everyone including the police barracks to free their leader”, he questioned.
He challenged that, “You are responsible media personnel, do your checks in the following towns: Kotokuom, Ofoase Kuma, Praso, Ofoase Panyin, and Brenase itself where those rascals are coming from and you will understand the damages they are causing to innocent people in these areas. One cannot travel through those towns after 5:30 pm. They place barriers and robbed them, slashing them with machetes and other deadly weapons. These must stop”.
General Buhari further expresses their disappointment with false reportage on the issue by some media houses and online portals, implicating the Akim Ofoase Zongo youth rather for the dastardly act.
“We want to call on the media houses too, as a matter of urgency retract their earlier wrongful reportage on the matter and re – publish the facts as we have put them out now, saying “we are not taking it lightly at all with all those media houses who had put out that wrongful reportage. They should do the needful” and we believe they will do so.
General Buhari also called on all the security agencies to ensure that all those criminals who had engaged in such criminal and heinous acts against them be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
“All we want is justice for our brother Daddy who had been killed and the 6 others who are still battling with their health. We need that justice to prevail as early as possible to prevent any possible reprisal and revenge attacks from us…We are law-abiding citizens, but we won’t allow this issue to rest until the right justice is served us. We trust the police leadership to ensure we get the needed justice accordingly.
