President Nana Akufo-Addo has thanked Ghanaians once again for reposing their confidence in him for another four years.
Akufo-Addo won a second four-year term in the Dec. 7 vote, narrowly defeating the NDC’s presidential candidate, former president John Mahama. Mahama has said he will contest the results, which he called “fraudulent”.
But delivering his 20th COVID -19 update, Nana Akufo-Addo said ” we have had a vigorous political campaign season, and elected a President and two hundred and seventy-five (275) Members of Parliament by over thirteen million Ghanaians, across some thirty-eight thousand (38,000) polling stations, by the effective safety protocols put in place by the Electoral Commission.”
Nana Akufo-Addo faces a hung parliament after the opposition clinched the last undeclared seat on Friday, potentially complicating his ability to implement economic measures to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) each won 137 seats, which represent a loss of dozens of NPP seats.
One constituency was won by an independent candidate who was a member of the Party but contested as an Independent candidate after losing the internal election to become a Parliamentary candidate.
In total Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413 votes whilst NDC’s John Mahama secured 6,214,889 of the total votes cast.
