Despite some disagreements over the financial source and the scheduling of the construction, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has once more presented a compelling argument for building the National Cathedral.
He asserts that there is never a good time to erect these memorials.
According to the President’s argument, societies that held grand cathedrals had not yet satisfied all of their fundamental development needs, including those for hospitals, schools, bridges, and highways.
The president of SECAM stated that if just developmental requirements were taken into account, there would never be a good moment to construct a church, a cathedral, or any of the great places of worship around the world. He was speaking in Accra at the 19th Plenary Assembly of SECAM.
He emphasized that when it is finished, the cathedral will not only help Ghana but all of Africa because it will fill a gap in the nation’s spiritual architecture.
The cost, according to Akufo-Addo, should be borne by the Christian community with assistance from the state.
He noted further that the National Cathedral will serve as a fulcrum for propagating the Christian faith, unifying the Christian community, and serving as a tribute to religious liberty.
“My personal view has always been that even though the Cathedral will be very much a national institution, the cost should be largely borne by the Christian community, with the state providing the land and initial funding to get the project off the ground.
“It will serve as a collective thanksgiving to the Almighty for the blessings He has bestowed on Ghana, sparing the nation of ravages of civil war that have bedevilled the histories of virtually all neighbours, and the outbreak of mass epidemics.
“Looking through the history of all the great cathedrals of the world, there has never been what can be called an appropriate time to build a cathedral. Invariably, it has taken many years, sometimes centuries, to complete,” the President said.
