In the heart of Winneba, a town in Ghana’s Central Region, stands a monumental project that embodies the spirit of unity and peace. The Unity Square, initiated by Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, is a testament to the power of art and architecture in promoting peace and development.
Winneba, a town with a rich cultural heritage, has a history of chieftaincy disputes and conflicts. However, with the vision of creating a more harmonious and prosperous community, Afenyo-Markin embarked on the Effutu Dream Project, a series of initiatives aimed at beautifying the town, promoting tourism, and fostering unity among its residents. The Unity Square is a main attraction project under this initiative .
The Unity Monument, designed by Theophilus Kwesi Mensah, a renowned Ghanaian artist and lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, presents three men erecting the flag of Simpa, symbolizing unity and peace among the Effutu people. While the specific names of these men aren’t mentioned, their roles represent significant aspects of the community’s history and dynamics.
The Two Standing Men-These individuals represent the two Asafo companies in Simpa, namely the Tuafo and Dentsefo. The Asafo companies are traditional warrior groups that play important roles in the community’s social and military organization.
The Kneeling Man-This figure represents a mediator who assists the leaders of the two Asafo companies in raising the flag of Simpa. The mediator’s role signifies the importance of conflict resolution and unity in the community.
The Unity Monument was unveiled by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on October 19, 2021, as part of the Effutu Dream Project, initiated by Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency.
The project aims to promote peace, unity, and tourism in the area. This masterpiece has become an iconic landmark in Winneba, attracting tourists and locals alike.
Promoted Peace and Unity, By symbolizing the end of conflicts and the beginning of a new era of cooperation, the Unity Monument has fostered a sense of togetherness among the people of Winneba.
Enhanced Tourism-The square’s beauty and historical significance have made it a popular destination for tourists, contributing to the local economy.
Beautified the Town-The project has transformed a previously deserted area into a vibrant space, showcasing the town’s rich cultural heritage.
Theophilus Kwesi Mensah’s artistic innovation is evident in the Unity Monument. His use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer(FRP), a durable material, ensures the sculpture’s longevity. The artist’s vision was to create a monument that would not only beautify the town but also serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and reconciliation.
The Unity Square is a testament to the power of art and architecture in shaping communities. This monumental project has brought people together, promoted peace and unity, and enhanced tourism in Winneba. The Unity Square is a shining example of what can be achieved when art, culture, and community come together.
