The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North Constituency, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has organized a free breast cancer health screening exercise for women in her constituency as part of activities to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Awuni emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups, especially for early detection of breast-related diseases. She urged women not to wait until October before checking their breasts, but to make it a regular habit — particularly during bathing — to notice any unusual changes. “Early detection saves lives,” she said, encouraging men to assist their wives with regular breast checks.
According to the MP, early detection and treatment can prevent death from breast cancer, and the disease does not necessarily mean a death sentence. She explained that with timely medical attention, surgery and treatment can save lives.
Hon. Awuni stated that it is her duty to ensure the well-being of her constituents, hence her decision to organize the screening exercise. “I will not wait for elections before caring for my people’s health. Their well-being is my top priority,” she said.
She revealed that this health initiative started in 2020 and has since been sustained through collaboration with assembly members in the constituency. According to her, the program has helped identify hidden health issues, including cases of HIV, which might have gone unnoticed without such screenings , “A healthy people is a healthy nation,” she added.
Hon. Awuni explained that she was motivated to organize the screening because many market women at Lapaz do not have time to visit the hospital due to their busy trading schedules. To make healthcare more accessible, she also organized free birth certificate registration, Ghana Card, and National Health Insurance enrollment alongside the screening.
She further encouraged beneficiaries who were referred to hospitals to follow up for proper medical care. “Being HIV positive is not the end of life. With medication, one can live long and healthy — even malaria can be more dangerous if not treated,” she advised.
Hon. Awuni reiterated that her commitment to these initiatives stems from the love she has for her constituents and her desire to see them live healthy and productive lives.
