Rawlings led the writing of the 1992 Constitution, yet as President, he lost cases in the Supreme Court. And who benefited the most from those rulings? Akufo-Addo. It was those very cases that made him popular, relevant, and influential. The judiciary was not perfect then, but at least Akufo Addo was winning cases. The Constitution was supreme, and no one was above the law—not even the man under whose watch it was written. When Rawlings’ party, the NDC, lost power, they handed over peacefully to the NPP, respecting the very Constitution they had helped create.
Now imagine if Akufo-Addo had been the one to write the Constitution and later became President. He wouldn’t just be President—he’d remove Yagbonwura, Ya Na, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, Ga Mantse, and all the Togbe and made himself national king of kings. Maybe he would have even made himself Chief Justice so he could sit on his own cases and rule in his own favor and made himself Kwaku Bronsam so that if the law fails, he would “juju you.”
We were deceived into believing that Akufo-Addo was the messiah—an elite who understood the law and was going to change the status quo. We believed he was not ordinary. But what did we see? This painti ma mentɔ President did worse! He found a way to sack Charlotte Osei without even giving her a bicycle after years of public service. And what’s worse, he turned around and told her, now that you’re unemployed, we can travel together. Travel to go and do what—when you don’t even have a “forklift”
And after using the Constitution to sack Charlotte Osei, he replaced her with Jean Mensa, who was allegedly involved in orchestrating her removal. But that wasn’t enough. He went on to use the same Constitution to sack Daniel Domelevo because he was too principled for his corrupt government.
And now, Jean Mensa wants to be protected by the same Constitution that was used to remove and humiliate someone else to her advantage. Madam, you are not a special human being. The President of the republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, and the NDC are also going to look inside that same Constitution and get back to you! If you have any shame, you’d have resigned by now!
Akufo Addo and his people think the Constitution is a Ladybird book their parents bought for them—something they can twist and turn as they please. For them, the Constitution is theirs to use, but the NDC cannot, because in their minds, the NDC is made up of lesser beings. They believe the laws of Ghana belong to them alone!
Even the great King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had to wait for Akufo-Addo to leave power before speaking about Free SHS. He knew that if he dared to criticize it, some party foot soldiers would be courageous enough to insult him. Under Akufo-Addo and the NPP, even Otumfour threaded cautiously. That was the level of arrogance!
Let them hear this: John Dramani Mahama and the NDC are also Ghanaians. Richard Jakpa is also a Ghanaian mandated by law to operate. If you try, they go Jakpa you. They are going to use the same Constitution, and you must be ready! You are free to organize press conferences, that is your right and I respect it, but after every press conference, H.E. John Dramani Mahama will simply open the Constitution wider and push through his resetting agenda.
