Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover has strongly criticized the reported GH¢1.5 million spent on this year’s Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House, saying he has a “huge problem” with the figure and disagrees with the government’s claim.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he said the reported cost of the event is unacceptable, particularly because the celebration took place within the presidency.
“I have a huge problem with it. I totally disagree with the government for saying that GH¢1.5 million was spent on the Independence Day celebration,” he stated.
According to him, an event organised at the seat of government should not attract such a significant expenditure.
Glover contrasted the current approach with the style adopted under former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, where national Independence Day celebrations were rotated across different regions of the country.
He noted that in previous years the event was hosted in cities such as Ho, Tamale, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, allowing people in various parts of the country to directly experience the national celebration.
The former minister explained that although hosting the event in different regions may involve logistical costs, the approach helped promote Ghana’s culture and heritage while giving citizens outside Accra a sense of inclusion.
He therefore maintained that decentralizing the Independence Day celebration is more beneficial, as it allows communities across the country to participate and showcase the nation’s diverse cultural identity.
