Binatone, in collaborating with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources marks 2021 Global Hand Washing Day today, Friday, October 15.
The 2021 Global Hand washing Day theme is “Our Future is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together.”
Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, in an interview said everybody must get involved in the celebration of the Day.
Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, the Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said handwashing had served Ghana well as no single case of cholera had been recorded since 2020.
Global Hand washing Day was founded by the Global Hand washing Partnership, a coalition of international stakeholders who work explicitly to promote hand washing with soap.
The day is celebrated every year on October 15 to educate people that hand washing with soap is an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and it saves lives.
The first Global Hand washing Day was held in 2008 when over 120 million children around the world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. Since then, Global Hand washing Day has continued to grow.
Global Hand washing Day is endorsed by governments, schools, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies, individuals, and more.
According to UNICEF, the simple act of hand washing after going to the toilet or before eating can reduce the risk of children getting diarrhea by more than 40%. It further says that in COVID-19 times, hand washing is likely to reduce the chances of COVID-19 infection by 36 percent.
