Ghana joins others in the continent today, Tuesday, 3rd December 2019 to celebrate Persons with Disabilities.
This year, the theme for the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “The Future is Accessible”.
With an estimated number of 3 million persons living with one form of disability or another, the Government of Ghana ratified the Disability Rights Convention on 21 August 2012 to become the 119 countries to sign onto the protocol. Article 29 of the Constitution of Ghana (1992) also guarantees the Rights of Disabled Persons.
Since 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3 December around the world. The theme for this 2019 IDPD is ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda’. The theme focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issue, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The Persons with Disability Act passed by the Parliament of Ghana in 2006 further reiterates the rights of PWDs.
