The United Nations has declared today, Tuesday,15th June 2021 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2011.
The theme this year is ‘Access to Justice’, which aims at reminding the importance to address the needs of elders who may seek recourse.
In line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, older people have the right to a life of dignity, free of all forms of abuse, including financial and material exploitation, which could lead to poverty, hunger, homelessness, compromised health and well-being, and even premature mortality.
Abuse of older persons according to the UN is a global social issue and must be looked at critically.
