The Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has attended the 30th Anniversary and Media Launch of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) in Accra.
Delivering her address, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare said it was a great honor and privilege to be part of such a milestone celebration. She noted that the 30th anniversary was not only a celebration, but also a moment of reflection on Ghana’s transformative journey over the years.
She recalled that 30 years ago, Ghana embarked on a bold economic path with the enactment of the Free Zone Act (Act 504) at a time when the country’s economy needed a new direction to create jobs, attract investments, earn foreign exchange, build resilience, and expand Ghana’s role in global trade.
According to her, the introduction of the Export Processing Zone concept was a strategic response to those challenges. The vision, she said, was clear: to pursue export-oriented industrialization as a pathway to sustainable development and to secure key economic benefits including job creation, foreign direct investment, foreign exchange earnings, international exposure, as well as the transfer of new technologies and skills.
She stressed that the Free Zones Programme quickly proved its relevance as it attracted significant foreign direct investment, promoted technology transfer, created employment, boosted non-traditional exports, and positioned Ghana as a competitive destination for investment.
Concluding her speech, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare emphasized that the Ghana Free Zones Authority has become a critical pillar in Ghana’s trade and industrialization agenda. She commended the board, management, staff, investors, partners, and the media for their dedication and continuous support to the Free Zones programme.
She further stressed that as the Authority marks three decades of existence, it is committed to charting a stronger path for the future.
She also used the occasion to officially announce the launch of the GFZA’s 30th Anniversary celebrations.
