Hon. Eric Opoku, Member of Parliament for Asunafo South and Ranking Member of Food and Agriculture is calling for transparency in the selection process for best farmers in the country.
He emphasized the need for a clear process to ensure that deserving farmers receive awards.
In an interview on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, Hon. Opuku asserted that when it’s time for farmers day , the minister comes to parliament to make official announcements about farmers day.
“Ghanaians have formally given the government the authority and mandate to govern the country, so any well-informed decisions he makes are his own. However, from what I understand, when it comes to the law, it works very easily when you interact with people. In any case, they ought to have talked with us so that we would know how to celebrate Farmers Day and even send messages.”.
“Ghanaians have been complaining about the awards given to farmers for a long time. The question is, which farmer is deserving of the prize, what procedures are used to choose the farmers, and are the farmers we choose truly deserving, or do we simply choose a party affiliate with no farming experience? These are a few of the procedures we need to examine.”.
Hon. Opoku gave an example of a best farmer award winner who was first turned down for a promised house because they were accused of being undeserving. He emphasized how crucial it is to confirm the eligibility of award recipients in order to preserve the process’s integrity.
Hon. Opoku hopes to inspire all farmers and guarantee that the awards truly honor exceptional farming accomplishments by encouraging openness and accountability.
