Two individuals have been arrested within 48 hours for allegedly possesing Biometric Verification Device BVD) reportedly belonging to Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The arrests according to the NDC’s Director Of Election Dr. Omane Boamah were facilitated by the vigilance of National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and members across the country.
The first arrest occurred in Nsawam, located in the Eastern Region, where an individual was apprehended in connection with a stolen Biometric Verification Device (BVD).
The NDC has expressed serious doubts about the Electoral Commission’s (EC) ability to secure the integrity of the electoral process, questioning how a BVD could be stolen and whether other critical components, such as SD cards, could also be compromised.
“The assurances of the EC are not enough,” stated an NDC spokesperson. “There are several security and data concerns surrounding the missing BVDs. What if these stolen devices are being used to study vulnerabilities or methods to breach the central system?”
The second arrest, which took place over the weekend in the Northern Region, involved an individual allegedly engaged in the illegal transfer of voters.
The NDC has vowed to continue its efforts to expose what they describe as “election criminals” and has reiterated its call for Parliament to investigate the Electoral Commission.
In a related development, the NDC has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to initiate an inquiry into the activities of the Electoral Commission.
The party has also announced plans for three public forums and demonstrations to demand greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
The former President and NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has also weighed in, urging Ghanaians to support the party’s push for electoral reforms and to vote for his proposed 24-hour economy initiative, which he promises will create well-paying jobs.
The unfolding developments have has intensified tensions as the country prepares for upcoming elections, with many now questioning the robustness of the systems in place to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
The Electoral Commission has meanwhile requested the Police to investigate the incident.
