Tension is brewing in Yilo Krobo traditional area a few hours to the climax of the Kloyosiplemi festival on Saturday, November 20, 2021.
Attempt to enstooled another queen mother at Okper Division ahead of a durbar to climax festival by the embattled Paramount Chief Nene Nuer Anorbah has resulted in a bloody clash.
Gun and machete-wielding men stormed the community amidst alleged firing of warning shots in an attempt to enstooled a parallel Queen-mother for Nene Teye Agor IV but were opposed by the opposing faction hence the clashes. One person was shot in the shoulder while three hacked in the head and arm
The victims were rushed to Atua Government Hospital for treatment. Three of the victims have been treated and discharged whilst the one who was shot in the shoulder has been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital, in Koforidua.
Okper traditional area has been plunged into years of chieftaincy dispute after the death of the late Divisional Chief Nene Anati Agor VIII in 2016.
Two parallel divisional chiefs have been enstooled by two feuding traditional factions onto the Okper Divisional stool.
They are Nene Odjorpemeh Nanekey Terkpertey Ofori Agor IX and Nene Teye Agor IV, known in private life as Isaac Teye Agor, a 31-year-old Economist with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
One of the victims Daniel Djaba said he was attacked and inflicted a cutlass wound in the head by the thugs who stormed the Community.
Addressing the media on Friday, November 19, 2021, after abandoning a planned demonstration in Somanya, Seyelor Kweku Adamtey of Adjikpo Okper Nakuyo stated that there have been persistent political interference in the local chieftaincy affairs by some known political figures of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, hiding behind Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to perpetrate illegality.
“We therefore as a matter of urgency and immediate concern call on the Municipal Assembly and more particularly the Eastern Regional House of chiefs to; enforce the functionality of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council. Reinstate the Okper Division to the Regional House of Chiefs and Parliament; The political elements and their interference in the chieftaincy matters should cease immediately; That power emanates from the people and they have the right to choose who their leaders should be but NOT Romeo Tetteh Kofi or any person to choosing for them. Till now, Okper people don’t know any Konor and no one should attempt to rule them until the final declaration is done by the court.” He said.
The Somanya District Police Commander Superintendent Andrews Anyani said an investigation is ongoing. He however called on the two factions to remain calm.
