Brekum Chelsea defender Zakaria Fuseini has disclosed that he was the one supposed to take the decisive penalty in a third-place play-off shoot-out against South Africa at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
According to him, the technical team headed by Ibrahim Tanko wanted him to take that decisive penalty that wrecked the country but claims he did not hear at the time they were calling him to step up due to the noise from the supporters.
Sarpong recently said that some of the players refused to take the penalty, hence he stood to take the decisive penalty.
He subsequently blasted his effort over the bar, missing a glorious chance to win the match for Ghana as they lost 6-5 on penalties.
However, the Black Meteors failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics which has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
But Zakaria Fuseini in an interview with Sylvester Ntim ‘Koke’ of Bryt FM described the latter as a liar over claims that none of the players were willing to step up for the decisive penalty.
“It is true that the coaches were calling some players to take it and to be honest, I was the one but because of the cloud at the stadium, I didn’t hear it. Before I realized the coaches want me to step up, Sarpong had moved about 15 meters. So I decided to allow him to play” he ended.
“Sarpong is a liar because no one said that he will not play neither afraid to play.
“If we were afraid to play, how come other players step forward after he blotted his effort? He quizzed.
“After the first five had taken their penalties we told ourselves that anyone who is courageous should step up. So after the first five, no one pointed any player to step up”
