On August 19, 2025, Dr. Abdul Atiku Jalilu, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, granted an interview on Adekyee Mu Nsem, the morning show on Bryt FM, hosted by Kwahu Dehyee, to discuss concerns surrounding the upcoming Akwatia by-election and its possible outcome.
Dr. Atiku emphasized that elections must be free, fair, and devoid of violence. According to him, elections are meant to be a simple democratic exercise, but negative attitudes and misconduct often turn them into chaotic events.
While some citizens have suggested scrapping by-elections, he argued that the real problem lies in the bad behavior of individuals rather than the electoral process itself. He recalled that similar challenges were witnessed during the Ablekuma by-election.
He stressed the need for strong and proactive security measures, noting that although some citizens may misbehave, firm enforcement is necessary to maintain peace. He criticized the police for not performing their duties effectively, which he said contributes to the recurring violence during elections.
Dr. Atiku also cautioned that political parties cannot be fully trusted to regulate themselves, as they often sign peace accords only to later return to acts of misconduct. He urged authorities not to underestimate the situation and called for a safe environment to be created ahead of the Akwatia by-election.
He concluded by insisting that the police must act firmly, arrest troublemakers, and ensure law and order prevail throughout the electoral process.
