The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has conducted an inspection at the Tema Harbour to assess the status of approximately 2,500 containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) but left uncleared at the port.
These containers, containing critical materials purchased under a previous administration, have accumulated demurrage charges totaling a staggering GHS 1.5 billion.
This development highlights significant lapses in resource management and inter-agency coordination, placing a severe financial strain on the nation.
Minister Jinapor expressed deep concern, describing the situation as unacceptable. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to addressing inefficiencies within the energy sector, ensuring accountability, and preventing such financial burdens in the future.
He pledged to take swift action to clear the containers, mitigating further losses while facilitating the implementation of essential energy initiatives. The Minister also reiterated the importance of efficient management of public resources to support Ghana’s developmental objectives.
This inspection underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing operational efficiency and safeguarding national resources.
