President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Assemblies to undertake routine maintenance of Government projects for their longevity.
He said, his administration was committed to sharing national cake to every Town and region in the Country and called on Ghanaians to adopt a maintenance culture for the Government to save money for other projects.
President Akufo-Addo said this when he commissioned the Salaga Astroturf football pitch in the Savannah Region, a project which was commenced in 2018 by the then Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development.
The facility was constructed at a cost of GH¢1.9 million. It is aimed at promoting sports and sports development in the Municipality, and to help unearth sporting talents in the area.
In November 2020, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said the ruling New Patriotic Party was aiming at constructing an astroturf for every district in Ghana.
“Total of 68 sports projects have been undertaken since 2017. Twelve have been completed and 56 are ongoing. One of the key projects we are doing in the sporting area is the construction of ten 5000-seater youth and sports centers of excellence in ten regions and these are at various stages of completion”.
“The Accra Sports Stadium which has not been renovated in a decade has now been renovated. Renovation works at the Essipong and Kumasi sports stadia have also begun. Work has also resumed on the University of Ghana sports stadium. We are also constructing at least 29 astroturfs in several communities across the country”.
On 10th June 2021, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned an ultra-modern Astroturf in Adjiringanor in the Adenta Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The commissioning of the latest Astroturf brings to about 50 the number of green turfs the Akufo-Addo government has constructed in various communities in the country.
“So far, over 50 Astro turfs have been constructed across the country by various government agencies such as Ghana Gas, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the Zongo Development Fund, etc.”
