The Ghana Prisons Service (GPS) has received 500 mattresses as donation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in collaboration with the United States of America Embassy in Ghana.
The donation which was launched in December, 2021 was part of a three-year project between UNODC and the Ghana Prisons Service in compliance of the Service with the Nelson Mandela Rules and an effort to improve the sleeping conditions of personnel.
The GPS, like the other security agencies has over the years had challenges which have been a burden of successive governments.
The donation has, however, come at the right time to help lessen the burden of officers.
The Chief of the Political Section of the US Embassy, Mr. Christopher Gunning congratulated the Ghanaian Government for its current work on a draft for a Community Service Bill, which he deems as an important step towards introducing efficient alternatives to imprisonment in line with international standards and norms and best practices.
Equally addressing legal reforms, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Interior Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, thanked UNODC for its assistance in drafting a new Prisons Service Bill, which is currently being reviewed by the respective ministry
Meanwhile, leadership of the GPS were grateful to the donors for their quick intervention and called on other corporate bodies and institutions to emulate the kind gesture.
