The Upper Manya Krobo District Assembly in the Eastern Region has prioritized Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the disbursement of the District Assembly Common Fund, providing economic support to 28 beneficiaries.
At a brief ceremony, seven PWDs received deep freezers and ice chests, while ten others were presented with cassava milling machines. Some beneficiaries were also given cheques to boost their petty trading and pay school fees.
The highlight of the support was the presentation of a laptop to Emmanuel Kwadwo Sackey, a visually impaired student who recently gained admission to the University of Health and Allied Sciences to study Public Health Administration.
He had appealed for a laptop to aid his studies.
District Chief Executive, Emmanuel Kwasi Lawer, explained that PWDs were the first group the Assembly considered under the Common Fund allocation. He assured that monitoring and technical support would be provided to ensure the items are used effectively.
Member of Parliament for the area, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, encouraged other PWDs to register with the Department of Social Welfare to benefit from future disbursements.
Government’s decision to uncap the District Assembly Common Fund has significantly increased resources available to local Assemblies, making it possible to channel more support to vulnerable groups at the grassroots.
