Dr Abdul-Jalilu Ateku, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and an esteemed political scientist has discussed the comparison of elections in Ghana and the United States during his interview on Bryt Fm’s Adekyee Mu Nsem show, hosted by Kwamina Sam Biney, on November 7, 2024.
When analyzing past American elections, he emphasized the notion of an opposition party in the US predicting a similar outcome for an opposition party in Ghana is unfounded.
“This claim lacks any factual basis. Political parties construct models and strategies that depend heavily on their organizational capabilities and grassroots mobilization within their constituencies”.
“Take Donald Trump, for example. His transition from losing a prior election to securing a victory in the current one can serve as an encouraging example for the NDC. Ultimately, the success of any party hinges on its ability to effectively engage voters around urgent national issues like unemployment, poverty, and living standards” he explained.
Dr Ateku added “Comparing American elections to Ghanaian elections is misguided; voters are focused on tangible solutions to real problems. Political parties must address key issues head-on and clearly communicate their successes to earn the trust of the electorate. Failure to do so will only jeopardize their chances at the polls”.
“Internationally, political parties thrive on relationships grounded in shared democratic values and human rights. In Ghana, both the NPP and NDC embody these principles as defined by the nation’s constitution. Any change in government will not undermine the robust relationship between Ghana and the United States, as American companies will continue to operate in Ghana regardless of the political landscape”.
“Strong institutions are vital to a thriving democracy, as emphasized by former President Obama, who underscored the importance of building and upholding these institutions. In Ghana, we uphold the same commitment to democracy and governance, ensuring a resilient future for our nation”.
